Another lawsuit filed against pain pump manufacturers

Michael Johnson says neither he nor his doctor would have agreed to have a pain pump devices implanted into his joint during two arthroscopic surgeries if he knew that by doing so it would result in a full joint replacement. Johnson contends that the manufacturers of the medical device knew that the pain pumps were unreasonably and dangerously defective, and yet they did nothing to warn him or his surgeon about the risks associated with using it. Furthermore, he , the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically prohibited the marketing of with anesthetics to be placed in the joint cavity.

Pain pump manufacturer no stranger to controversy

It was also engaged in an illegal scheme for which it was prosecuted for paying hundreds of thousands – and possibly millions – of dollars to physicians for using its hip and knee replacement products exclusively.

Three pain pump manufacturers at crux of controversy

on q pain pump 100x100Pain pumps are devices designed to deliver medication directly into the surgical site to manage pan after surgery. While effective for pain management, physicians began seeing more and more patients suffering from a debilitating condition known as chondrolysis following use of pain pumps. This concern was validated in a recent study by The American Journal of Sports Medicine, which identified a specific type of chondrolysis, Postarthroscopic Glenohumeral Chondrolysis (PAGCL), associated with the use of pain pumps. As a result, hundreds of people harmed by the devices have filed suit against the manufacturers of pain pumps.
