Shoulder dislocations most often occur during sports activities and young men are at the greatest risk of having them, one of the main reasons young athletes see orthopaedic surgeons, according to a study published in the March 2010 issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS). The study also puts elderly women at high risk of shoulder dislocation. Researchers add that despite the prevalence of shoulder dislocations, the injuries are relatively under-reported.

Jean-Thenistor Pascal, the Haitian-Quebecker professional boxer and current WBC Light Heavyweight Champion, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder this week and will be unable to train or fight for about nine weeks. The boxer hurt his shoulder while successfully defending his title against Adrian Diaconu last week.

Two studies show that knee surgery is beneficial at times but should not be performed routinely for the treatment of osteoarthritis, according to Fox News. The studies were published in a recent New England Journal of Medicine. One finds that medicine combined with physical therapy is just as effective as surgery for relieving the pain and stiffness of moderate or severe arthritis. The other study finds that tears in knee cartilage that often result in surgery are very common and do not always cause symptoms.
