Bradford to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

October 28th, 2009 by Jennifer Walker-Journey

sam bradford 100x100Oklahoma Sooner star quarterback and 2008 Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford announced he will leave the team prematurely to undergo shoulder surgery before pursuing a career with the National Football League. The shoulder repair surgery requires a four- to six-month rehabilitation, leaving him unable to play.

Bradford wowed Sooners fans with his talent and his humility. Following last season’s successes, Bradford turned down what many expected would be millions of dollars from the NFL and opted instead to stick with his college team for another year. However, during the first game of the season against Brigham Young University, Bradford suffered a shoulder sprain. He missed three more games before aggravating the more in a loss to Texas. His decision to have the season-ending prompted questions from media about whether he regretted his decision not to go pro last year.

“No. Absolutely 100 percent no regrets,” he said at a press conference announcing his decision. He later elaborated about his decision to stay: “Considering this is where I grew up and this is where I dreamed about playing, to put this in the past is extremely tough. I’ve been blessed to be here. The past 3 1/2 years have been 3 1/2 of the best years of my life. I wouldn’t trade a day of it.”

will put Bradford in a difficult situation with the NFL, as he will have to convince recruiters that he can make a full recovery. As of now, Bradford has until mid-January to declare for the draft.

Bradford was a great quarterback, teammate, and as you stated a humble guy by all accounts. In a world were money is everything and players feel they're being disrespected for only getting several million dollars a year to play a sport, Bradford was a welcome change.

Many will second guess his decision to come back, but I believe him when he says he has no regrets. I would like to think I would've done the same thing myself. Although there are circumstances where leaving school early is warranted, like in Josh Freeman's case where he left Kansas State because they were bringing in a new coaching staff, changing the system, and rebuilding for what would've been his senior year, I believe players should strongly consider the debt they owe to their university and fan base for giving them the opportunity they were given.

I wish Bradford all the luck in the world and look forward to him giving it a shot on Sundays. Hopefully he can break the mold of unsuccessful OU quarterbacks in the NFL and go out there and light it up!
